Lagkadia
This is the main village of the region and the homeland of the Deligiannis family. It is built amphitheatrically on a steep mountainside, creating a landscape that is rugged and imposing. The elevation differences within the village itself are quite significant.
Lagkadia became widely known for its master stone builders, who constructed multi-story stone buildings. These craftsmen, known as “mastores” (builders), played a crucial role in shaping traditional Greek architecture. Their contribution is especially significant because the architectural style they introduced respects both the mountainous terrain and the practical needs of its residents. The view from Lagkadia is stunning, and the horizon is so open that, on a clear day, you can even see Zakynthos in the distance.
It is said that some of the most impressive churches in Lagkadia, such as those of Saint John the Baptist and the Archangels, were built in just 40 days, due to the tight deadlines imposed by Veli Pasha, the son of a Turkish governor. As you stroll through the village, you’ll also come across stone fountains, charming little features that adorn the streets.
And finally, at Lagkadia’s main square, you can enjoy a coffee and the village’s famous baklava at one of its traditional cafés.
